Artist’s Statement

Most of my recent fine art pieces have concentrated on allegorical figures engaged in spiritual exploration or struggle.

My recent series of paintings “Pieces of the Sky” depicts the fragmentary nature of our awareness and the unifying essence that lies beneath the surface of individual identity. The 15 separate pieces in this series represent partial truths and partial awareness. Elaborately costumed characters in each piece represent the varied and detailed disguises adopted by the fragments of a larger unified awareness. While the costumes in these pieces tend to disguise the essential similarity of the figures that wear them, I have portrayed the disguises as objects of beauty in their own right. Each painting in this series celebrates the truth of unity and the beauty of multiplicity and diversity.

I am currently working on a series of interconnected paintings that explore our role as co-creators of our own reality. We are represented as non-human or semi-human characters to reflect the conviction that we are unfinished creatures still struggling to evolve, to transcend ourselves. Web-like structures in these paintings represent an infinite labyrinth of consciousness that we are in the process of both shaping and exploring. Masks, costumes and stage lights emphasize the theatricality of these endeavors.
